Veitchi Frame was appointed by Thomas Johnstone Ltd to deliver LGSF and HR Steel podium at East Newington Place in Edinburgh. Delivered over a 13-week programme and covering a floor area of 2022m2, the project required a coordinated approach from design through to manufacture and installation to maintain momentum on a busy urban site.
The structural solution incorporated 59 tonnes of cold rolled steel alongside 44 tonnes of hot rolled steel, supporting a robust and efficient lightweight steel frame structure as the development progressed above ground.
The project programme required early momentum on site, with key milestones needing to align tightly — from podium works through to the first panel deliveries and the start of above-ground framing. Maintaining a smooth transition and reliable progress depended on clear sequencing, controlled logistics, and strong coordination across the site team and partners.
Our approach
To support these milestones and keep the project moving, we focused on:
- Sequencing around the podium-to-frame transition, ensuring the first panels could be installed efficiently once the initial concrete pour was complete
- Panelised manufacturing and phased deliveries, helping maintain momentum on a space-restricted site and reducing unnecessary handling on site
- Programme-led installation planning, coordinating lifting and unloading to keep crews productive and minimise downtime
- Collaborative working with the on-site team and partners, aligning day-to-day logistics and short-term lookaheads to keep activities on track
The result
With early-stage milestones achieved, including the first concrete pour and initial panel deliveries, the project has successfully moved into the next phase, with the lightweight steel frame structure now progressing above ground. This keeps the scheme firmly on track towards completion of 65 studio apartments for students in Edinburgh.
